Crescent Moon Spring: a disappearing natural wonder in the Gobi Desert, China.

چکیده
Introduction Yueya Spring, or Crescent Moon Spring, is a geological wonder located about 6 km south of Dunhuang city, Gansu Province, northwest China. It owes its name to the shape of the spring, or more precisely, the pond fed by the spring water, which resembles a Crescent Moon (Figure 1). Currently, the pond is about 200 m long in an east-west direction and about 50 m wide. The water surface in the pond is about 1134 m above sea level. Surrounding the spring is the equally famous Mingsha Mountain, also known as Singing Sand or Echoing Sand Mountain, which is simply a giant sand dune. The dune takes its name from the sounds made by the sand as the wind sweeps across the desert. The dune stands more than 100 m above the spring (Figure 1). This part of Gansu Province has a typical continental arid climate with extremely cold winters and scorching summers. The average yearly rainfall is less than 40 mm, whereas the potential evaporation is over 2400 mm.

This manuscript presents the measurement of scattering and absorption properties of dust aerosol from a comprehensive field campaign in a Gobi farmland region of northwest China during spring 2012. Overall, the manuscript could make a good contribution to the scientific research by providing useful scientific knowledge on the interaction among dust aerosol, atmospheric chemistry, and climate ch...
متن کاملSimulation of the mineral dust emission frequencies from desert areas of China and Mongolia using an aerodynamic roughness length map derived from the POLDER/ADEOS 1 surface products
[1] To determine the location of the potential dust source regions and to evaluate the dust emission frequencies over the arid and semiarid areas of China and Mongolia (35.5 N–47 N; 73 E–125 E), we established a map of Z0 from the composition of protrusion coefficient (PC) derived from the POLDER-1 bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF). Using a =4 =4 resolution Z0 data set, we ...
متن کاملModeling mineral dust emissions from Chinese and Mongolian deserts
The present study investigates the frequency and intensity of mineral dust emissions over the deserts of eastern Asia from 1996 to 2001. Mineral dust emissions are simulated using a physical dust emission scheme over a region extending from 35.5°N to 47°N and from 73°E to 125°E. The input parameters required by the dust emission model are (1) surface features data including aerodynamic roughnes...

متن کاملContraction of the Gobi Desert, 2000-2012
Deserts are critical environments because they cover 41% of the world’s land surface and are home to 2 billion residents. As highly dynamic biomes desert expansion and contraction is influenced by climate and anthropogenic factors with variability being a key part of the desertification debate across dryland regions. Evaluating a major world desert, the Gobi in East Asia, with high resolution s...
